Haven't been on here in a while, thought I would stir up the ol' shit. Anyone want to talk some math? I graduated a little while ago, so bow before the fledgling mathematician!

I just rattled off the Peano Axioms off the top of my head. Go!
It came about when discussing at work hash functions and how sometimes they're good and sometimes they're bad. My friend noted that it's because of information theory. I quickly saw his point and bowed to his superb grasp of the related concepts. I further described it as compression: if the compression is lossless, then it will invariably make some inputs larger and some inputs smaller. Pigeonhole principle. He laughed at pigeonhole principle as I proclaimed it to be the best principle ever. I also noted how the pigeonhole principle is equivalent to the axiom of induction (I think it is), which is one of the Peano Axioms defining natural numbers. I basically listed them all off on the spot for fun too. - True story. This is what I talk about with my friends sometimes. Lol. -------------------- This land is made of Love and Peace!

What are you going to do with your newly minted math degree? My friend is writing software for cell phones.

Congratulations. Seriously. Anyone that gets a degree in Mathematics deserves respect.
I stopped taking math with variable equations and laplace and fourier transforms, and thankfully never had to take statistics. I love math, but my love turns to mere like starting with radians, and steadily degenerates to 'can't take it anymore' at the above mentioned transforms. Although limits are fun. Of course, my dislike also stems from some horrible math teachers that I had, especially with matrix math, and calculating diffusion rates through filter media. And of course, matrix math is mostly used for programs, so all you people talking about code are way above my head. This post has been edited by rokeisland on Jul 31 2009, 05:52 PM |
